Battle of the Books Team

“The purpose of the Elementary Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the elementary school level. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Even during the height of the competition, students and coaches should remember that the goal is to READ, not necessarily to win! “

All County Chorus

All County Chorus consists of fifth grade students who are auditioned in their home school.  The six students meet before school to practice and work hard to learn a variety of music.  These students come together for one intense day of rehearsals in the Spring with other ACC students from all over Cumberland County.  The following day, they present a wonderful, free concert in the Crown Theatre.   All County Chorus students would agree that it is one of the highlights of their year!

Strings

All 5th grade students are eligible to sign up for string class at the beginning of each year.   Informational letters are given out at the recruiting concert in late August.  Parents and students are given further information at the Parent Nights hosted by MacWilliams in September.  The strings class meets twice a week in the afternoon for 45 minutes.  Students usually play one or two concerts for PTA meetings during the school year.  In addition students will play for the North Carolina Symphony on a 5th grade field trip.  In late April student will participate in  the Orchestra Spring Festival at the Cumberland County Area.  Students benefit from learning how to play a string instrument as well as musical concepts of note reading and musical vocabulary.  It is a wonderful opportunity for students who love music.
